Business Transformation Consulting

Senior program management, business transformation, and operational delivery — across mining, resources, infrastructure, and beyond. Delivered personally by Matthew Johnston.

The Change Tank delivers across five capability areas, built over 25 years of hands-on consulting in the industries where the stakes are highest. The work is not advisory — it is delivery. Matthew Johnston takes on programs that need someone who understands both the strategy and the operational reality of making it happen.

Regardless of which capability is at the centre of an engagement, the model is the same: Matthew works directly with the client, gets into the detail, and remains accountable for the outcome from brief to delivery. The breadth across capability areas reflects the reality that complex programs rarely sit neatly in one category. Operational readiness is a business transformation project. A technology program is also a change management challenge. The work is integrated — and so is the approach.

Cluster 01

Business Transformation & Change Management

Large-scale business transformation requires both strategic clarity and operational rigour — the ability to diagnose what needs to change, design the path forward, and then make it happen at the delivery level. Matthew Johnston has led transformation programs across organisations of all sizes and in sectors where transformation happens under pressure, not in a controlled environment.

  • Business transformation strategy and delivery
  • Organisational restructure and design
  • Change management across large-scale programs
  • Stakeholder engagement and executive advisory
  • Process improvement — Lean and Six Sigma methodologies
  • Performance improvement and operational uplift

Cluster 02

Program & Project Management

Managing a complex program is not about running a schedule. It is about understanding the dependencies, anticipating the problems before they surface, holding the delivery team to account, and keeping the executive sponsor informed without burying them in status reports. Matthew Johnston has managed programs at the scale and complexity that most project managers do not encounter — including world-first technology deployments and multi-continent operational programs.

  • End-to-end program management — from business case to delivery
  • Project governance, controls, and reporting
  • PMO establishment and management
  • Planning, scheduling, and risk management
  • Multi-stakeholder program delivery in complex environments
  • Greenfield project delivery and site mobilisation

Cluster 03

Operational Readiness & Go-Live Assurance

Most projects have a go-live date. Fewer have a genuine Day One readiness plan — one that accounts for the people, the processes, the systems, the interfaces, and the organisation's actual capacity to sustain operations from the moment the switch is flipped. Operational readiness is the discipline of closing that gap. It is The Change Tank's most distinctive capability, built through 25+ years of mobilisations that have had to work on the first day.

Example engagement: 8 mines mobilised simultaneously across a remote overseas operation — 76 contractors, 12,000 tasks, 2 million manhours. All operational in 8 weeks. Outcome referenced in an ASX announcement.

  • Operational readiness planning and delivery
  • Mine and site mobilisation — greenfield and brownfield
  • Day One readiness programs and go-live assurance
  • Training design and workforce capability development
  • Systems and process integration for operational go-live
  • Contractor and interface management at scale

Cluster 04

Technology Implementation & Embedded Delivery

Deploying emerging technology in a complex operational environment is a different kind of program management challenge — one that demands both technology literacy and operational credibility. Matthew Johnston currently manages a portfolio of frontier technology rollouts for one of the world's largest resource companies. His prior work includes managing the world's first commercial deployment of autonomous haulage technology at a live mine. This capability extends beyond advisory — The Change Tank implements, embeds, and delivers.

Example engagement: World's first commercial autonomous haulage deployment at a major Australian coal operation — from integrated trial to full live operation.

  • Technology program implementation in operational environments
  • Autonomous systems and robotics deployment
  • Pilot-to-production program management
  • AI and automation integration in mining and resources
  • Innovation portfolio management at enterprise scale
  • Embedded delivery within client programs

Cluster 05

Embedded Leadership

Some engagements call for more than a consultant. They call for a senior leader who sits inside the organisation, carries accountability alongside the client's own team, and operates as a genuine member of the leadership group for the duration of the program. The Change Tank offers embedded leadership arrangements — where Matthew Johnston or an associate operates in a defined leadership role within the client's structure. The engagement is time-bound and purpose-built; the accountability is real.

  • Interim program director and embedded senior consultant roles
  • Acting leadership during transition, mobilisation, or transformation
  • Embedded change lead — within client teams for program duration
  • Senior advisory with embedded accountability
  • Associate placement under The Change Tank model
  • Retained advisory arrangements for ongoing senior access
